5 Things I do to practice ‘Self Care’ as a mum

Reading these words ‘ self care’ makes you think who won’t be doing this. It’s like the basic routine for any human being. Well yes it is, but when you become a mom- this often is forgotten. Self care becomes trickier. Looking after yourself becomes harder as you start to run out of time for yourself knowing you’ve got a million and one other things to do.
But don’t forget, you are needed! Most of all- Your lil ones need you. He wants you to be happy, relaxed, strong and cheerful! They depend solely on you no matter what. Hence the aura you’re carrying starts to reflect on them. You would notice when your mood is a happy one, your kids will be cheerful too. And if you’re very irritated, they’ll end up causing more troubles around. Makes me think of Newton’s law sometime: ‘ for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction!’ Before turning into a ‘super mom’, we all were ladies too! We loved dressing up, going out with friends, watching movies and playing games! Then what happened now?? As you’re reading my write up just think back at the last time you did something entirely for yourself.

This is something I’ve struggled with in the past (before I even knew it was called self care!) and it’s something I’m always working on – it is a ‘practice’ after all. However, over the last few months I’ve made some massive steps in the right direction so I thought I’d share with you what self care really looks like in my daily life. And trust when I say this, it has turbo boosted my confidence, opened channels for me and made me value for myself once again.💙

Having a very successful teaching career for so many years and then just being at home breastfeeding and changing diapers got me into a tiny hole of ‘thts it- its over!’ for me. I wanted to join back work and I still do, but thinking of Nayel holds me back to wait a little more longer. I don’t know when will the right time – be!!

Anyways , I have dedicated today’s post to all the super mommies out there! We all are doing a great job and are perfect with all our imperfections! Wohoo!! 👏🏻. Hence ,here’s my personal top 5 ‘Me Time’ things. Maybe you could try a few or create your very own!

  1. Writing – I can’t explain how much I’m enjoying writing. I started blogging around 6 months ago and I never knew I would fall in love with it this much! My blog is a free wordpress thing linked with my instagram and facebook and I’m not making any money out of it as yet ( I do plan too! 😋). Hehe. It’s like a therapy for me. I radiate my feelings and thoughts out frm my body here in forms of blogs. And the response I get inform of little likes and comments uplifts me. After a hectic day of tight schedule routine with no friends around and completely talking to my one-word- wonder toddler , I look forward to be sitting on my bed with my hot mug of mint green tea and letting it all out as words typed from my little iphone keyboard. I do believe I need to work on many skills yet, but I’m glad I started! There are so many fellow mummy bloggers that I have started to connect to- and it’s just making me feel more of who I really was- pre mama. 💙
  2. A nice shower time : Mostly when daddy’s home or Nayel’s asleep, I stand under the hot shower to unwind myself. I do invest in beautiful aromatic shower gels and candles for my shower time! As silly as it sounds, it makes me feel grand💜. My next target is some bubble bath with bath salts and lavender essential oils. If you know some – Please recommend 😌
  3. A dessert with a cup of tea and an inspirational read: I wasn’t a sweet endings fan until Nayel was born. Since then, I crave for a warm dessert like a pudding or a small piece of cake with nuts and more nuts and some more nuts!( probably to accelerate my sugar levels to match a toodler’s runtime 🤣). If there’s nothing I can find, I bake myself a carrot cake treat and enjoy it with a hot cup of chayee😍😍. All with anything inspirational and uplifting to read. Be it a fellow mum blog or a nice and simple article. The last book I read was a beautiful one’ A temporary gift by Aasma Hussein. Chk it out! Really moved me.
  4. tps://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8725.jpg”> This is my personal favorite chaye mug gifted to me by my very good friend Danielle😌[/caption][c
  5. ps://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8723.jpg”> Didn’t I mention my love for a nutty carrot cake?? This is what I meant 😍[/caption]
  6. Movie night : This is my favorite when I just want to be out of the house ! We are in a time in our lives where we are trying to be everywhere and do everything. It’s okay to say no- and just be by yourself. My husband takes the parenting hat for a couple hours while I can recharge my batteries by watching a nice movie in the cinema alone or with my cousins! Nayel and daddy enjoy their play time or mall hopping meanwhile!
  7. Spa Time : No I dont mean long massage dates alone 😂- sadly I’m not there yet. But what I really do is having something similar to a personal spa time at home! This includes moisturizing my face every night with my favorite body butter. I make sure no matter how lazy I am, to remove my makeup , brush my teeth and put some nice scents! 😍 . Once in a while I also lather my feet before going to bed. That’s it! Some 10 min solely for myself ☺️

Very simple things yeah. But so important to keep your mama fingers running. Oh I’ve also recently come back to my daily supplement such as folic acid and calcium. I was so persistent on them when I was pregnant and then left soon after. I’m back on mine ! What about you??

As I end this post I’ve jotted down some more ideas for you guys. Pick one up tell your husband he’s on daddy duty and… ‘start right today!’

  • Take a hot bath or shower
  • Put your favorite pajamas on and turn on your favorite show or movie
  • Brew a hot mug of coffee or a tea and grab your favorite book
  • Bust out your favorite exercise
  • Wear makeup just because !
  • Lace up your sneakers and go for a run- In Dubai now adays , a lil tricky 😝 – Hello treadmills!
  • Hide away to get a project done
  • Watch funny youtube videos🤣🤣
  • Get a massage
  • Go out to eat by yourself
  • Learn how to say no😠
  • Subscribe to a box & treat yourself ( this is on my list now!! )
  • Go shopping
  • Brew a cup of coffee and sip it in silence
  • Pull out the cookies or the chocolates you’ve been hiding in the back of the pantry and indulge😍😍😍
  • Join online forums to help encourage other moms and women
  • Give yourself a compliment each day- cuz you deserve one mama!
  • Grab an adult coloring book if you’ve been interested in coloring !
  • Go for a long drive and jam out to your favorite music
  • Take a long nap or simply go to bed early.( strong conditions apply as a mum😂)
  • Turn your phone off and just be present in the moment ( I need to do this ! )
  • Just say no- to everyone & everything for some time😌☺️

•Happy Self Caring mommies! – cuz you’re worth it!•💜💜

Our Georgiean Travelogue

Finally after a long week of settling in which mainly had tonnes of laundry , unpacking and cleaning; I’m sitting comfortably on my black couch with a Haagen -Dazs Strawberry icecream cup, all cuddled up in my comforter writing this blog at around 11:30 pm- Thursday night! Wooh!! ( The best part – daddy and Nayel are snoring in the other room 😋)

So, I had thought of writing a detailed blog on our recent family trip to Georgia and here it is!

A little background on why we decided Georgia… We had planned to visit Spain this summers but unfortunately our visas took very long and everyone had taken off frm work- we had to cancel it last minute and replan our trip. After shortlisting countries that give a visa-on-arrival, Georgia was finalized! ( so if you’re a Pakistani and a UAE resident- you get a visa on arrival). But Unfortunately two of my brothers weren’t granted visas on arrival and they were sent back to Dubai- this was the most upsetting part of our trip 😦 😦 – with no reason given ! )

Anyhow.. now the good part! You would be forgiven for wondering if Georgia’s part of the Middle East. The actual vibe however is European. Part of what makes traveling so fascinating is the sheer amount of history contained in a small geographic area. We landed in Tbilisi , rented a car and drove around. It’s a small city with beautiful architecture, extremely courteous people and lots of halal food 😍 – yes if you’re a muslim and looking for food options here – plenty of them. Our favorite restaurants here were Turkish and Persian 👌🏼👏🏻

https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8187.jpg”> Tea at Mado Cafe on Freedom Square! An excellent place for coffee and desserts[/captio
https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8224.jpg”> İskender kebap (Alexander Kebab) is one of the most famous meat foods of northwestern Turkey and takes its name from its inventor, İskender Efendi, who lived in Bursa in the late 19th century. This was the best we had so far at a Restaurant called Deniz in Tbilisi [/captio
https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8188.jpg”> Turkish Breakfast platter in Mado Cafe[/captio

We stayed at ‘Iota Hotel’ in old Tbilisi for two night. Our city exploration included riding a hop-on tourist bus to get sneaks of the city. We also strolled around Rustavali Avenue and Freedom Square. Sadly, it was a very hot day and we couldn’t enjoy that much. Nonetheless, the beautiful architecture along side river was my favorite! It’s a clean city with very well maintained old history. With Nayel, we couldn’t really visit a museum or an art gallery- which is my only regret.

https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8229.jpg”> Old tiny streets of Tbilisi- We loved walking here![/captio

The real fun began when we drove up to heaven like places- Gaduari and Kazbegi 😍 a green slice of Georgia up near the Russian border- where we witnessed a beautiful country shaped by rugged mountains, rivers, valleys and meadows.

We climbed to the top of the world and walked in the clouds. At least, that’s how it felt.

https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/img_8277.jpg”> Breathtaking views😍- that’s Mount Kazbeg with snowy peaks![/caption]

We rented a huge 3 story house from airbnb for our 4 days stay. On our way there which was around 3 hours from Tbilisi , we stopped at aCarrefour market and bought loads of food to be cooked! (so glad we found halal chicken😍)

Those 4 days were just perfect! As a family, we had so much fun cooking together , playing Monopoly, driving around the spectacular mountains and enjoying non- stop ☔️ rain. However the highlights were – paragliding over the lush green mountains- touching the white fluffy clouds! What an experience it was ! We were so lucky to have Nayel’s grandparents with us as they took care of him while mummy and daddy enjoyed their adrenaline junks -!gliding and hiking. Yes hiking was one challenge! We hiked up in the kazbegi mountains for an hour or so to get glimpses of an amazing waterfall!! Each step of trouble there was worth the view- no words or pictures can do justice to what we actually saw!

It doesn’t matter where you go but Georgia’s nature will keep you speechless. Some of the interesting parts of our trip were eating fresh fruits which were very cheap! Such as peaches, cranberries and cherries! The small towns that we passed by on our roadside were so colorful sometimes with old grumpy ladies who obviously didnt know a single word of English. ( google translator and image communication was our best friend! ) 😋oh and did I mention how easily accessible internet was : free wifi everywhere 😍

We got back to Tbilisi for one last night stay before we flew back to Dubai . But once we got back on the ground, it was so hard to stop dreaming of the time we lived in the ☁️ clouds ☺️.

It was overall an amazing trip with totally breaktaking views! I am listing down few important details that might help you if you’re planning to visit Georgia 🇬🇪:

  • Currency: Georgian Lari (GEL)
  • Primary Airports: Tbilisi (TBS), Batumi (BUS)
  • Water : yes and no. We used mineral water, while most people generally claim the fresh water to be safe.
  • Internet Situation: WiFi is rampant; available at most guesthouses and cafes. Also central Tbilisi has a free WiFi network, TbilisiLovesYou
  • Language: Georgians speak Georgian, which is its own unique language and has its own alphabet. Most locals also speak Russian. English is only prevalent in touristy areas of Tbilisi and some of the mountain ski regions where we stayed. Have patience though, as Georgians have a deep culture of hospitality and will work with you 😉
  • Budget: This is a pretty decent budget destination. It’s not rock-bottom- but comparing to Europe- equally beautiful views less on pocket!
  • Food – very cheap and lots of halal options. We enjoyed Turkish and Persian the most.

I hope you enjoyed reading my not- so- tiny travelogue. Do comment if you’ve been to Georgia sharing your experiences. You can also write to me if you have any questions to plan your trip. I’ll be more than happy to help you.

Till my next adventure- see ya!

The Eid Diaries

Hope you all had a wonderful Eid! We did too!💜 3 days of non- stop fun, eating , dressing up , exchanging gifts and sharing laughters. Alhamdullilah- (This really makes me wana thank @ayeina_offical for bringing up the concept of #alhamduillahforseries ( check it out on instagram and facebook) – I now really think of all the tinnest blessings that Allah swt has bestowed upon us and thank Him for it!

So coming back to the Eid we celebrated , I thought of sharing my diary of events for the happening ,hooting, hushy bhusy and memorable 3 days. 💜

• Chapter 1 – The Chaand Rat 🌙 ( night before Eid) ‘•

We had planned to stay over at Nayel’s dada dadi’s house so we headed there 2 days before Eid. Being a mama has made me a very excited human to celebrate Eids for Nayel. For the first time ever, I got buntings and Eid banner along with colorful balloons to be put up in the house so that Nayel starts to notice what Eid really is- ( I know its too early😛) . We were expecting a friend to come and put henna for us but that didn’t happen so we had to rush to a nearby parlour to get it done! No Eid’s complete without it yaar.

ref=”https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8100.png”> Mandatory Henna picture- 😍😍[/capt

There was an Eid breakfast scheduled for family and friends and our place and I had the responsibility of baking a cake. If you’ve been following me on instagram (@frommummytonayel)- you would be aware of my cake that I can’t stop talking about! So this was a 4 layered dark chocolate cake , frosted by chocolate swiss meringue butter cream and chocolate ganache- topped with some yummy goodies! Yes all home made! Thanks to pinterest, youtube and instagram! So by around 3 am – I completed my cake , ironed Eid clothes for daddy, myself and Nayel and went to nap for a few hours!

f=”https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_7996.jpg”> Tadaa! This wall was used by almost everyone for their click clicks! [/capt
f=”https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_7993.jpg”> In progress[/capt
f=”https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_7987-1.jpg”> The cake! I absolutely loveddddd the cake topper!! 😍[/capti

• Chapter 2 – Eid Mubarik! •

At around 6:30 am, everyone was back from Eid namaz. I couldn’t go this time as Nayel was sound asleep. I wanted Nayel to be dressed up before everyone returned, so I woke him up and put on his shalwar kurta that his nanijan had sent ❤️, got dressed myself – well tried too! ( Nayel’s takes all my bigger efforts and time now!). We greeted everyone and enjoyed a yummy breakfast together! The menu had puris, cholay, alu tarkari , sawayeein , cake , quiche and parathay!! Yummmy!! Nayel and mummy also made some goody bags filled with candies, and party goodies for all the kids! This was my favorite part- I absolutely enjoyed giving them and that joy and excitement they all got in- made my Eid even more beautiful!

https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8106.jpg”> Abu Bakr busy counting his candies! 💜[/caption

https://frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8002.jpg”> Mummy and daddy trying their best to get a nice Eid picture- this is the reality 🤦🏻‍♀️[/caption]The

There was an utter silence after the breakfast as everyone slept! 😴

We were invited over by my mamu for dinner later that day, So we got home, changed and headed to Pergolas restaurant at Roda Al Murjool hotel in Dubai downtown. Ohh what amazing food we had! A lavish buffet full of delicious delicacies! Highly recommended!

/frommummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8036-1.jpg”> Dinner with family! – those are my beautiful cousins, mami and nanijan!😍[/caption]

• Chapter 3 – Eid day 2 •

The day began with my mamu’s call early morning to join him for breakfast at his place! I was soo tired and sleepy but when it’s his call, its the end. There was no time to get dressed up😂 , so we went over to his place almost in our nightsuits and enjoyed the yummy halwa puri ka nashta😍😍! Perfect start to day 2! Following that , Something exciting was planned for Nayel. I had won a party invite for Nayel on a competition on instagram from @dubaimumssay and @planetscribbles, so we took Nayel there. 3 hours of games and activities in a playland. Total fun. I mean I too enjoyed that alot! – more thn Nayel 😉

mmummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8051-1.jpg”> Do – not – disturb! I’m exhausted after playing so much[/caption]It doesn’t

It doesn’t end here!😂 – our family planned a nice dinner at the JW steakhouse and we enjoyed the meaty meal there! One of the best steaks in town! Hands down!! Nayel however, enjoyed running around the hotel bare foot with his dada abu more. 😂

ummytonayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8109.png”> Look at him! Wasn’t bothered at all- he thought his dad owns this hotel ☺️[/caption]

• Chapter 4 – the final day of Eid ! •

After the very busy 2 days of Eid, we started with a lazy late breakfast. Daddy was on leave so Nayel had company while mummy prepared buttery french toasts at around 11 am. Sipping my hot cup of chaye post Ramadan felt 😍😍- Nayel’s chachu( uncle) gifted him a very interesting game toy which he was busy exploring. Later that day we headed towards Sharjah at N’s grandparents home. We were invited over for a dinner at a family’s place so yes more food! The biryani was 🤤

So Eid is 99% eating yummy desi food, getting dressed up , exchanging gifts and collecting monetry eidi from nanis and dadis😍😍!

That was all from our Eid celebrations!

Mummy , daddy and Nayel would love to read your feedback on ours and also how you spent your Eid? How much Eidi did you collect? What dessert shone on your table!!

nayel.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/img_8014.jpg”> Ma sha Allah!!

Learning not to say ‘No’

Parenting is hard! Epecially now as Nayel is speeding up in learning new things every day- its becoming challenging. Having a background as an Educationist ( Allhamdullilah) is helping me alot to understand some of his behaviors and tantrums( yes already🤔🙄),While for some I do get totally clueless🙃.

One thing that I was pondering over since many days now is my tendency and frequency to say ‘No’ or ‘don’t ‘ to him. I mean its just so abrupt. For example he is constantly puting something or the other in his mouth and on that I keep saying no ! no Nayel! Or , if he’s trying to run to something dangerous – I would scream No! I’m sure many of you are in the same boat as me too.

Naturally one of the the very quick words that is getting added in his vocabulary is the negative one ‘no’-( which will be soon given back to me from him).🙂 Kids mirror your speech. They start talking to you the way they’re spoken to.

The thing is – It’s really easy to say no… WAY too easy. So then how do I remove negative words when talking to my child remains the question here. It’s not going to be a cake walk to retrain my mind to ditch negative words and actions like “no”, “stop”, “don’t”, “can’t”, etc. but it is POSSIBLE! It’s all about practice. And so I found a very interesting and practical list for myself to work on in feew scenarios that I’m also sharing with you all here 👇🏼

                      Alternatives to ” No ”

Nayel’s been hitting me with his toys lately- some growing up thing I guess and I used to scream ‘No’at him which really didn’t make a difference. Yesterday instead of No, don’t, I said : ‘ouch that hurts mummy (making a sad face) – toys are to play not to hurt mummy’ to which he still hit me 🤣- but 3rd time he stopped and came up to hug me !! I think practice would really help 😬😍.

I’m on it people! Do give it a try and I would love to hear your comments /suggestions/ idea too!

Happy avoiding saying ‘No’🤓!

Team parenting

As baby N is growing up MashAllah, I hardly get time to do my own thing- be it sipping a hot cup of chaye peacefully or writing my blog. So right now I really have so many of the pending ones to finish that I have locked Nayel on his baby chair and here I am sharing with you all one of the best parenting days Huzaifa and I had so far!

Last weekend ,my sister proposed a movie date. Beauty and the beast- out childhood favorite movie was out this weekend and there was no way I wasn’t going for it. So thinking Friday ,daddy would be home I said yes to my cousins and apa for the movie and the plan was to put Nayel to sleep around 10 pm and daddy would be with him! All excited and happy , the plan was going fine until daddy Nayel declared that he has to go to a bbq at night with friends! 😭😤 I became a mom-zilla and panicked as I really wanted this outing. Daddy as usual was chill as he had thought of taking N with him for the friends night. I mean really?? I was obviously all no no for this cuz my mommy hormones were rushing in my body😂 . Not at all was this idea a good one! I mean a bbq in a desert – that too with daddy and his friends- that too late at night! Ughh! Silly questions and statments started popping in mind and out of my tongue: some of were: ”No ways can Nayel stay without me!”

”What if he’s hungry! How am I going to come and feed him?”

” Huzaifa I don’t think you can take care of him by your ownself. You will be busy with your friends bbqing and baby will be ignored😔”

”He doesn’t sleep without me”

”He will miss me 😂”

Finally I decided not to go and stay home. To my surprise daddy was all happy and excited to take Nayel with him and he forced me to go and enjoy the movie. Very reluctantly and worriedly I agreed.

Huzaifa on the other hand was even more charged up! I prepared Nayel’s bag and food and off then went. (Interesting I really missed my mom here as I saw myself doing what she used to do back in my school days when I used to go on trips- praying duas and blowing on me so I’m safe ⭐️💜💜 -) Now I really understood what it meant 🙂. I did the same for my baby.( like he was going for some waror what🤣🤣) .

I was soon picked up by my sister and we joined our cousins at the mall for the movie. Pop corn and nachos – check ✔️ . It was finally happening: I got to watch my favorite movie in 3D cinema without baby Nayel!😍 I cannot express how much I enjoyed. Totally relived my childhood. The movie was spectacular ! Ofcourse constantly texts and calls to daddy to check oknNayel were all a part of it! My heart was partially there ❤️.

Baby Nayel on the other hand enjoyed playing with daddy’s friends. He was calm and happy. There was so panic, no crying , no potty and no tantrums. It was a mission accomplished successfully! All thanks to my dear loving husband😍😍

Nayel and daddy came back home at 3:00 am that night and I hugged my baby after 4 hours!!

Parenting is not only mummy’s job. It’s a team work where daddy gets a share too. Sometimes in our sentiments and mom love we forget how neglectful we become of our partners- they are equally capable and loving – afterall its their baby too.

This little time out gave me a break to unwind and enjoy, do something that I really liked in a stress free way! Huzaifa and I are going to do such sharing more now 😉😉. What about you?

Check out some gallery 🙂🙂👇🏼👇🏼
