‘Coolness of eyes’

A Beautiful Dua –

Being a mother is a great feeling. An achievement. A blessing. Allhamdullilah. But with every blessing Allah swt bestows on us comes great responsibilities. life was very easy before Nayel was born. I always felt like this world owes to me. It owes me happiness, luxury and comfort. We all think that way in our lives sometime or the other.

Having Nayel now, I feel I have a duty to perform. Raising kids nowdays is not easy! Hats off to our parents for providing us with the best of what they could.

Here, by raising kids I mean ‘raising good muslims’. Inorder to do that – we have to be one too. So the day Nayel was born, my own journey to be a better muslim who could set an example for her child began. ( May Allah swt give me strength and guide me to be on the straight path).

In some of my blogs from now , I’m going to start up with a mini series of my inspirations and lessons I learnt from various Surahs from the Quran; some hadiths and some duas too.

I hope you will find them useful.

So talking about parenting, two years back Huzaifa and I got an opportunity to attend Noman Ali khan’s lecture that he delivered on one of his visits to uae. Some of his words from that really struck and melted my heart.  Having Nayel now , it really makes sense to us.

He mentioned and discussed a very powerful and relevant dua found within the Qur’an from Surah Al-Furqan, Ayah 74:
رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا
Translation: Our Rab! Grant us in our wives and offspring the coolness of eyes and make us a leader of those who guard themselves against evil.
What a beautiful dua indeed. Here- he focused on the ‘coolness of eyes’ which I really had to ponder over. Have you ever thought about it? That’s how he explained it:

”I’ll give you a simple example of coolness and warmth of the eyes. Imagine you’re at the airport and there are two pairs – each of a mother and son. One mother is saying farewell to her son as he is flying off somewhere. And the other mother is greeting her son who flew in from somewhere. Both the mothers are crying. But for one the eyes are cool. And for the other the eyes are warm. One is shedding tears of joy as she sees her son after many years; her eyes are becoming cool. But the other is letting go of her son. This is what? The eyes becoming warm.” – NAK

The eyes becoming cool” is an Arab idiom. The Arabs when travelling in the desert would wrap their faces to protect from sandstorms. However, they cannot afford to cover their eyes without losing their vision, so they had to keep their eyes exposed. When they finally found a refuge, interestingly they would say “My eyes have finally become cool.” So in literature, this expression equates to finding refuge from a storm.

So by making this dua we are asking Allah swt to make our families (our spouses and our children) a safe zone from the chaos in the outside world, i.e. we come home from the outside world of chaos and we look at our families, it fills our eyes with tears of joy and we feel like we have finally come to a place where we can rest and relax.

Moreover by making this dua we’re asking Allah swt to make our spouses and children the reasons to make our eye wet with tears of happiness and joy.
To understand it a little deeper , I read in one of the other explanation : To depict how powerful & beautiful this du’a is. Know that there is no stronger bond between a mother & her child. So imagine the state of desperation of Musa’s (Alayhi salaam)’s mother when she put her baby in the water to save him from Fir’aun. Will he be ok? Will he drown? Will he get dehydrated? Will he be picked up by Fir’aun’s soldiers? She didn’t know! So can you imagine her emotion when she was finally reunited with Musa (Alayhi salaam)? Look how Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) describes that emotion:

So We restored you to your mother, that she might cool her eyes & she should not grieve.{Surat Ta-Ha 20: Verse 40}

Allah is describing the most amazing joy & relief! The most indescribable feeling in the heart by the same expression: the coolness of the eyes!

This is exactly what we ask from Allah from this powerful and beautiful du’a.
May Allah (Swt) grant us with spouses & children who are the coolness of our eyes & that He makes us leader of the pious & righteous. Ameen.
(I would really recommend all the parents to memorize this dua and recite it regularly. )
